Descendants of Verena Baumann and Johannes Döbeli

Generation One

  1. Verena1 Baumann was born on 11 July 1790 at Hunzenschwil, district of Lenzburg, canton of Aargau, Switzerland, to Abraham Baumann and his first wife, Anna Maria Zubler. The family were legally citizens of Stilli in the district of Brugg, about 20 km to the north-northeast; Anna Maria was native to Hunzenschwil. Verena married Johannes1 Döbeli at Meisterschwanden, in the district of Lenzburg, on 16 March 1816. The family sailed from Le Havre on the bark Eliza Thornton, arriving at the port of New Orleans with the four children listed below on 19 May 1843, when Johannes was 54. By the end of the same year, they settled in Marine Township, Madison County, Illinois, about 30 miles east of St. Louis, Missouri. Johannes died there between 1845 and 1850, and Verena seems to have become a sort of matriarch and landowner until her own death on 19 January 1865.

It appears that the name Döbeli was interchangeable with the spelling Töbeli, but that some towns preferred one spelling, and some the other. On-line records show Töbeli entries from Holderbank and Seengen, and Döbeli entries from Meisterschwanden, Fahrwangen and Seon. (These are all in Lenzburg district.) Among the on-line records there is a Holderbank baptism for a Johannes Töbeli, son of Johannes Töbeli and Catharina Läder, dated 19 October 1788, which makes him the right age to be our ancestor. If this man went to Meisterschwanden to get married, they presumably would have recorded him as a Döbeli. Unfortunately, at the moment I have no way to prove whether this is in fact what happened. Looking at a map, one wonders why a couple from Holderbank and Hunzenschwil, both at the north end of the district, would go to get married in Meisterschwanden at its south end; but then again, the distance involved is only maybe a dozen miles. The fact remains that this family is only ever recorded in America with variants of the Döbeli spelling. Without access to the original Swiss records, I can offer nothing conclusive.

Children of Johannes Döbeli and Verena Baumann:

    1. Maria Döbeli, born 29 August 1816
    2. Jakob Döbeli, born c. 1820
    3. Verena Döbeli, born c. 1823/24
    4. Marianna Döbeli, born November 1834

    Generation Two

  2. Maria2 Döbeli (Johannes1), born 29 August 1816 at Holderbank, married only months after arriving in America, on 23 November 1843 in Madison County to Johann Christoph Conrad Waage or Conrad Christian Waage (usually appearing as "Christian"), a German Protestant immigrant who arrived in 1836. Christian Waage was born in Dannenberg, Amt Lüneburg, Kingdom of Hannover. Dannenberg is now in the state of Niedersachsen or Lower Saxony, just west of what used to be the border between East and West Germany. According to his immigration file, Christian was born on 09 February 1818, but the only relevant record in the parish church of Dannenberg is for a birth ten years earlier, on 09 February 1808, to Claus Heinrich Waage and Dorothea Elisabeth Meyer, of the Lauben neighborhood of Dannenberg.

Today one can drive north out of Highland a mile or so to Waage Road, where the old farm is now owned by a Nagels family. Four children survived to adulthood and appear in written records, but three or four more are commemorated on tombstones next to the main family stone in Mundis Cemetery, near the Village of Marine in Marine Township. Their names and dates have partially worn away.

Christian died without a will on 24 July 1866. His estate was administered jointly by Maria and their son-in-law John Bardill (see no. 6 below). Maria lived in relative prosperity until her death in Marine Township on 17 March 1888.

Adult children of Maria Döbeli and Christian Waage:

    1. Anna Christina Waage, born 27 August 1847 in Marine Township
    2. Hermann Niklaus Waage, born 28 January 1851 in Marine Township
    3. Sophia Maria Waage, born 11 April 1853 in Marine Township
    4. Heinrich Christian Waage, born 02 May 1855 in Marine Township

  3. Jakob2 Döbeli (Johannes1), a blacksmith, was born about 1820, probably in Holderbank, and died between 1852 and 1855 in Madison County, Illinois. He was married in Saint Louis, Missouri on 07 October 1847 to Emilia Hotz of Östringen, Grand Duchy of Baden, now in the southern German state of Baden-Württemberg. Emilia, usually known as Emma, was born on 23 December 1824. She and Jakob had two children; after his death, she married Lorenz Zahner (on 08 March 1855 in Madison County) and had six more children, not listed here. She died on 04 December 1904. I don't know why Jakob and Emma's first child was born in New Orleans; perhaps one of his direct descendants could enlighten me?

Children of Jakob Döbeli and Emma Hotz:

    1. Jacob Doebele, born 20 March 1849 in New Orleans, Louisiana
    2. Rosa Doebele, born October 1852 in Madison County, Illinois

  4. Verena2 Döbeli (Johannes1) appears in the passenger manifest of the Eliza Thornton, but does not show up again in America. I have found one unexpected lead, though: there is a group of obviously related records on line that show a "Franey Debly" as the mother of Henrietta Washington Deck, a member of the family that gave its name to Deck's Prairie in Madison County, Illinois. The Decks lived in Marine Township, very close to the Döbeli and Waage farmlands. I haven't found any marriage record for Henrietta's father, Joseph Deck, nor have I found the primary source of this "Franey Debly" spelling; but it must have come from somewhere, and Verena could well have gone by the Swiss nickname Vreni, which is pronounced more or less as "Franey". She also could easily have died before the 1850 census, as did her father. It's not an easy call, but I have finally chosen to include Henrietta and her descendants in this report because I consider it more likely than not that she was indeed the sole daughter of Verena Döbeli. If any proof should surface that she wasn't, I'll remove them all, and if I find (or am given) proof that she was, I'll take out this long-winded caveat.

Joseph Deck was born in Rockingham County, Virginia on 16 April 1812, to Michael Deck and Susanna Monger. I'm not sure what became of him after 1850.

Child of Verena Döbeli and Joseph Deck:

    1. Henrietta Washington Deck, born 17 April 1845 in Marine Township

  5. Marianna2 Döbeli (Johannes1), born in November 1834, confusingly appears as Maria or Mary in most records. This is much less problematic after her marriage to farmer Samuel Kleiner on 25 September 1857 in Madison County. In the Eliza Thornton's passenger list, she appears as Anna; possibly she was actually named Maria Anna.

The Kleiners had a steady series of ten children, after which Samuel soon died. He was born on 01 February 1833 at Egliswil, Canton Aargau, and died on 04 September 1876 in Madison County. Mary remarried on 20 November 1879 to Joseph Schreiber, and by mid-1880, Mary, Joseph, and all Mary's children had removed to Riley County, Kansas, including the older daughter, Louise, and her husband and two children (see no. 13 below). There is no indication that Joseph had any children of his own. He was born around 1833 in Switzerland, and died in Riley County on 08 November 1884. Mary died sometime after 1920. Joseph and Mary are buried in Fairview Cemetery in Riley County; it seems Mary's stone is broken.

Children of Marianna Döbeli and Samuel Kleiner:

    1. Louise Kleiner, born 20 July 1858 on Deck's Prairie in Madison County
    2. Edward Kleiner, born 14 June 1860 in Madison County
    3. Karl Kleiner, born 08 November 1861 on Deck's Prairie
    4. Wilhelm Kleiner, born 15 October 1863 on Deck's Prairie
    5. Hermann Kleiner, born 25 July 1865 on Deck's Prairie
    6. August Kleiner, born 11 August 1867 on Deck's Prairie
    7. Otto Kleiner, born 25 July 1869 on Deck's Prairie
    8. Joseph Kleiner, born 27 December 1871 on Deck's Prairie
    9. Sophia Kleiner, born 10 September 1873 on Deck's Prairie
    10. Emil Kleiner, born 06 October 1875 on Deck's Prairie, died 17 June 1877

    Generation Three

  6. Anna Christina3 Waage (Maria2 Döbeli, Johannes1) was born on 27 August 1847 at Marine, and married Johann Bardill in Madison County on 24 May 1866. Johann, or John, served as a joint administrator of Christian Waage's estate alongside Maria Döbeli Waage. Born near Saline on 25 April 1841 (to Josias Bardill and Clara Marcut, both of Davos, canton of Graubünden), John Bardill was a prosperous merchant of dry goods and groceries, and was retired by 1880.

    4. Johann Oskar Bardill, born 18 December 1873 at Grantfork

  7. Hermann Niklaus3 Waage (Maria2 Döbeli, Johannes1), born 28 January 1851, was married to Regina Maas of Germany on 01 January 1884 in Madison County. Regina came to the U.S. when she was a small child. She and Hermann had three children before 1890. The Illinois Statewide Marriage Index lists a second entry for "H.N. Waage" and "Mrs. Regina Moss Waage" on 21 January 1891; the significance of this is unknown to me. Maybe it refers to a divorce. Hermann died on 26 January 1893. (Regina appears to have had a fourth child, a son born in March 1894; she and this son's father appear not to have been married, and after 1910 he appears to have taken the name Waage in preference over his unknown father's surname — which was apparently Wheete — becoming Merrel Owen Waage.)

Children of Hermann Waage and Regina Maas:

    1. Georg Christian Waage, born 09 March 1884 at Marine, died 25 July 1884
    2. Louis Johann Waage, born 08 January 1886 at Marine

  8. Sophia Maria3 Waage (Maria2 Döbeli, Johannes1) was born on 11 April 1853, and married Franz Plocher on 15 September 1870 at Highland. Franz was born on 18 August 1845 near Highland, to Samuel Plocher and Barbara Leicht, recent immigrants (1843) from Württemberg, now part of the German state of Baden-Württemberg. As a young man, Franz worked as an assistant in John Bardill's store in Grantfork (see no. 6 above). By 1880, he had a farm of his own near Saline. Sophia died on 04 December 1895 at Highland, and Franz died on 18 July 1898 at or near Saline.

    13. Myrtle Ada Plocher, born 13 March 1892 near Saline

  9. Heinrich Christian3 Waage (Maria2 Döbeli, Johannes1), born 02 May 1855, is in English-language records always referred to as Henry. His first marriage was to Elise Gilomen (called Eliza in English), born 07 December 1856 to Niklaus Gilomen and Maria Elisabeth Hirni, both born in Canton Bern and raised near Highland. Henry and Eliza were married on 20 February 1877; she died soon after their fourth anniversary, on 25 February 1881. Henry remarried on 14 March 1882, to Elise Augustine Branger, born on 27 October 1855 to Christian Branger and Elisabeth Iberg. (Elise Augustine is the name on her baptism record, but descendants insist her name was actually Elisabeth Augusta. Either way, though, she appears to have mostly used the name or nickname Elise and its English equivalent, Eliza.) Henry developed a problem with alcohol, and in August 1884, at Elise's insistence, the family moved to Le Roy, Coffey County, Kansas: Kansas was then a "dry" state. Henry died at Le Roy on 04 March 1935, and his obituary indicates that he was well known and well liked in the town. Elise died there on 23 July 1936.

Children of Henry Waage and Eliza Gilomen:

    1. Maria Adeline Waage, born 28 November 1877 in Madison County

    6. Gilbert Waage, born 20 October 1894 in Le Roy, Kansas

  10. Jacob3 Doebele (Jakob2 Döbeli, Johannes1) was born in New Orleans, Louisiana on 20 March 1849, but by the middle of 1850 he and his parents were back in Marine, Illinois. With Jacob's generation the family name reached its customary American spelling and pronunciation (as if spelled Debley). At the age of 21 he was living alone on his own farm in Grantfork, not far from his mother and stepfather. He was married in Madison County on 09 January 1872 to Elizabeth Wiegand, who was born 02 June 1855 at Marine. Jacob and Elisabeth may have lived at Edwardsville in western Madison County (the county seat) before they moved to Hanover, Washington County, Kansas in about 1880. Elisabeth died in Hanover on 05 April 1926, and Jacob also died there on 16 August 1939.

Anton, a farmer, was born in Switzerland on 25 December 1834 to Bernhard Hürlimann; father and son arrived in the United States in 1854. By 1900, Anton was retired and owned his own house (in a time and place when many were rented). Anton died in Madison County on 07 April 1924, and Rosa died there on 14 August 1925.

    7. Sophia Riniker, born November 1892 in Riley County, Kansas

  14. Edward3 Kleiner (Marianna2 Döbeli, Johannes1) was born on 14 June 1860. He married Rosa Anna Hohman on 30 December 1884, in Beatrice, Gage County, Nebraska. Rosa was born 06 March 1867 in Ohio. The couple lived in Riley County, Kansas until about 1899 or 1900, when they moved to Ottawa County, Kansas, eventually settling in the city of Delphos by 1910. Ed was a farmer, but also worked as a salesman and a mechanic. Rosa died in Delphos on 12 July 1927. Ed died there on 14 February 1938; his obituary says he died at the home of his married daughter Thelma, but this may have been originally his house, shared with Thelma and her husband after they got married. Ed and Rosa are buried in Delphos Cemetery.

In about 1887 he married Anna Catharina Jahnke, who was born 08 May 1865 to Heinrich Friedrich Jahnke and Lucia Ursula Ringer. They had a farm in Madison Township, Riley County, until about 1910, when they moved to Rainey Township, Washita County, Oklahoma, along with an allied Swart family. Two of their children, Samuel and Bessie, married two of the Swart children. Charles died in the city of Rocky, in Washita County, on 23 October 1955, and Anna died there on 11 June 1958. She was the older sister of William Kleiner's wife Sophia (see immediately above), and was sometimes known as "Katie". Herman and Katie had a farm in Madison Township.

Children of Herman Kleiner and Katie Stadel:

    9. Mabel F. Kleiner, born c. 1904
    10. Ivan M. Kleiner, born c. 1907

  18. August3 Kleiner (Marianna2 Döbeli, Johannes1) was born 11 August 1867. He was sometimes known as Gus. The earliest spelling I can find for the name of the woman he married is Rieka Schoorman, but their grandson's obituary calls her Eldereka Shoreman. The spellings Rieka, Rieke, and Rike are frequent short forms for women's names in German that end with these two syllables, but the only such names familiar to me are Friederike and Ulrike; I don't know of one that sounds like Eldereka. She was born in November 1868 in Illinois, to German-born parents, Albert Schoorman and a mother whose name appears as "Kea," "R.K.," and "Kate."

Gus and Rieka were married in about 1894. They had a farm in Madison Township in 1900; by 1910 they had moved to Jewell County, Kansas, where they remained. In addition to their natural daughter, they had an adopted son, Lloyd. In the 1910 census return, the eight-year-old Lloyd is listed as a farm laborer.

Children of August Kleiner and Rieka Schoorman:

    1. Mariam Louise Kleiner, born 23 July 1897
    2. Lloyd Kleiner (adopted), born c. 1902

  19. Otto3 Kleiner (Marianna2 Döbeli, Johannes1), born 25 July 1868, worked while still a boy on the farm of his sister and brother-in-law Louise and Jacob Riniker (no. 13 above). About 1890 he married Anna, born April 1872 in Kansas, and by 1900 they had their own farm in Madison Township. Otto and Annie had five children, but one died before 1900. (This child's name may have been Jessie, if the trancription on FindAGrave.com has an incorrect birthdate. None of the other Kleiner brothers appear to have had any children who died before 1900. But the cited birthdate for Jessie Kleiner is in February 1898, which would be impossible for a child of Otto and Anna, if their son Vernon was really born two months earlier in December 1897.) Annie died in 1932, and Otto died in 1957. They are buried in Fairview Cemetery in Riley County.

Children of Otto Kleiner and Anna:

    1. (child A) Kleiner, died before 1900
    2. Minnie A. Kleiner, born April 1894

  20. Joseph3 Kleiner (Marianna2 Döbeli, Johannes1) was born 27 December 1871 and married about 1894 to Bertha C., who was born in January 1875 in Illinois to Swiss parents. They had a farm in Wild Cat Township, Riley County. Bertha died prior to the 1915 Kansas State Census. Joe was still alive in 1938, living in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Children of Joseph Kleiner and Bertha:

    1. Elizabeth J. Kleiner, born December 1894
    2. George S. Kleiner, born c. 1903
    3. Frances W. Kleiner, born c. 1905

  21. Sophia3 Kleiner (Marianna2 Döbeli, Johannes1) was born 10 September 1873. On 16 September 1891 she married Henry F. Fosha, who was born in Stephenson County, Illinois on 24 April 1867 to John Fosha and Wilhelmina Schueneman. Henry and Sophia had a farm in Riley County for some 30 years, and then moved sometime in the 1920s to Colorado Springs, El Paso County, Colorado. Henry died in Paxton County, Colorado on 10 March 1956, and Sophia died in Colorado Springs on 08 August 1960.

Children of Sophia Kleiner and Henry F. Fosha:
