Generation One
An unpublished work by Paul R. Hirni (see no. 27 below) gives information about the children of Christian Hirni and Elisabeth Ryser that doesn't match the parish records from Highland. I've just (in June 2010) become aware of a possible source of these inconsistencies. In 1971, around the time Paul was composing his history of the family, Florence Hirni Jackson (see no. 85 below) published a similar, but shorter, account of the Hirni family history in a Fresno County, California genealogical publication called Ash Tree Echo (in volume 6, issue 1). It appears that in the family lore as it was passed down, and then passed around among relatives, the birth and death dates of the second daughter named Eliza (Elise) were transferred to the son John (Johannes), becoming slightly altered in the process. His real dates were for some reason forgotten. This version was then apparently combined with a list that included Eliza with her correct dates, and John's new dates were altered further to put his birth in 1852 instead of 1855; someone probably remembered that he was older than Eliza. Previous versions of this page compounded the errors, because I assumed that if Paul wrote that there was a child born in 1852, there must have really been one. Let this serve as a warning never to assume anything in genealogy. I still have no corroborating evidence for the son Joseph still listed here, but it is at least plausible that he could have existed: he would have been born after the 1860 census and died well before the 1870 one; and baptism in 1860s Highland often took place months or even a full year after birth, so he might have died before the parents got around to having him baptized. The next time I get a chance, I will check again for a burial record.

On 31 March 1887 he married Olivia Moler in Bates County. Olivia was born in October 1869 in Missouri to Jefferson Thomas Moler and Anna E. Dille. John appears to have been a farmer and miller. He and Olivia lived in Schell City, Vernon County, Missouri until at least 1910, then moved to St. Clair County, Missouri by 1920 and to Miami, Dade County, Florida by 1930. John died in Miami on 01 March 1946.

Louis was an older half-brother of William Henry Hammer, who married Rose's sister Adeline (see directly preceding); he was born to Anton Hammer and his first wife, Emerita Branger, on 02 September 1864, in Highland, Madison County, Illinois. Rose and Louis lived for a while in Pleasant Gap Township, Bates County, and their first few children were born there; but along with William and Adeline, they moved to Olds, Alberta around 1901, where they settled permanently. Louis died there on 20 September 1939, and Rose also died in Olds, on 30 October 1955.

Hyde and Susannah Nira Micklewait, and was an older brother of Sarah Ethel Hyde, who married Florence's brother William two years later (see immediately above). This couple settled in Visalia or Exeter, Tulare County, California, not far from William and Sarah. George died rather young, on 24 March 1920. Toward the end of her life, Florence resided with her daughter Ethel in Exeter; she died on 16 June 1972 (possibly the date was 16 February rather than 16 June), and is buried in Exeter Cemetery.

George died in Omak, Okanogan County on 22 May 1945, and Lillian, who apparently never remarried, died in nearby Okanogan, Okanogan County in March 1978. They are buried with the same stone in Omak Memorial Cemetery; their son George, who died in childhood, is buried in the adjoining plot. (Thanks to Janet Culp for some info.)

Heinrich3 Hirni (Christian2, Christian1) was born in Bates County, Missouri on 05 November 1883, and was known in English as Henry. He married 1) Mrs. Kittie Belle Schwartz Toler, probably a widow, on 11 March 1911; whether this took place in Missouri or California is unclear. Kittie was born in Missouri on 10 May 1884, and died in Tulare County, California on 05 September 1942. Henry then married 2) Mrs. Ruth Johnson Creason, on 29 October 1943. Edward and Alma stayed in Bates County to raise their family, probably living in Prairie City. Paul served as president of the Suncoast Swiss-American Society, and was an avid genealogist. Around 1971 he wrote a survey of the Hirni family in Switzerland and America, focusing on the descendants of his father Christian up to that point. (This was never published, but a typescript is now in my mother's possession in a safe environment. I've been told at least one other copy exists.) His research has served as an invaluable groundwork for the further tracing of our ancestors in Switzerland.
Paul and Alice appear never to have had any children. Alice died in Pinellas County on 26 November 1995. Paul lived to the age of 95, and died on 01 March 1999, also in Pinellas County.
