Descendants of Christian Hirni (1809–1875)

Generation One

  1. Christian1 Hirni was born on 09 December 1809 in the Swiss town of Beatenberg, which lies on the slope of the Niederhorn overlooking the Thunersee (Lake Thun) just northwest of Interlaken, in the canton of Bern. His grandfather, Hans Hirni, came to Beatenberg from Interlaken when he married in 1736. Christian's parents were Jacob Hirni and Susanna Gafner; he was the seventh of their eleven children. On 24 June 1836, he married (1) Elisabetha Bühlmann in his family's home parish church of Gsteig bei Interlaken. (At that time, what was to become the city of Interlaken was a village known as Aarmühle.) Elisabetha was born in Beatenberg 06 January 1814 to Jacob Bühlmann and Magdalena Dauwalder. She died soon after bearing her second child, on 26 December 1838. Christian then married (2) Elisabeth Ryser, again at Gsteig bei Interlaken, on 31 December 1840. Elisabeth was born in Ringgenberg, district of Interlaken, on 10 January 1819, to Johannes Ryser and Barbara Öhrli; her father seems to have been a citizen of distant Heimiswil. In late 1844, the family left Switzerland, arriving in the U.S. in early 1845. They settled in St. Jacob Township, Madison County, Illinois, among a large contingent of recent migrants from Switzerland who settled near the city of Highland. Christian was an elder of the church there during its early years, and was a prominent early citizen. He died on 07/08 May 1875 in the course of a return visit to Switzerland: his ship, the Schiller, sank off Britain's Isles of Scilly. A monument to those lost in the disaster stands in Hugh Town on St. Mary's Isle. Elisabeth died in Highland on 04 January 1886 and is buried in the Highland City Cemetery.

An unpublished work by Paul R. Hirni (see no. 27 below) lists two sons of Christian Hirni and Elisabeth Ryser who do not match any records I have found. Paul names them John and Joseph, but since there was already a son named John, and since the second was born after the first died, it seems more likely they were both named Joseph. They don't appear in any census or church records, or any records I know of. Unfortunately Paul didn't write what his sources were; he may have been working from memory. I include the two Josephs here, but with the warning that it's questionable whether they actually existed.

He arrived in Illinois with his parents, and a large extended family, in early 1835. Niklaus and Elisabeth Hirni Gilomen lived and farmed in several places around Highland before settling permanently in Marine Township in the 1860s. They celebrated their fiftieth anniversary in 1906, and ultimately survived seven of their eight children. Elisabeth died on 15 November 1911 from edema ("dropsy"). She died at the age of 34, on 24 November 1875. Caspar may have remarried in 1892, to Ida Katherine Britsch. He died on 10 March 1911. Christian married Louise Leutwiler on 02 April 1869. She was born on 10 May 1852 to Johann Jacob Leutwiler and Anna Maria Zobrist, and may have been a cousin of Elisabeth Leutwiler Hirni. In 1869 or 1870, the family moved to Bates County, Missouri. Louise died there on 07 March 1884. On 07 August 1884, Christian married Lena Wirz, who was born 25 November 1861 in the canton of Aargau, Switzerland. Christian died in Rockville, Bates County, Missouri, on 29 November 1912. 5. Marianne2 Hirni (Christian1), usually known as Mary, was born 01 April 1850 in St. Jacob Township, and married Nicolaus Michael on 03 January 1869 in Madison County. According to the church records in Highland, Nicolaus was born on 15 April 1847 in the city and department of Colmar, in Alsace; yet his descendants insist that he was Swiss, and in fact there seems to be no evidence of him in the birth records from Colmar, nor of anyone with the surname Michael. This may be a case where family tradition preserves some information that isn't evident in official records.

Nicolaus and Mary lived in St. Jacob Township. Mary died on 27 January 1919 from a stroke. Nicolaus died on 21 October 1930, from "uremia and old age".
